April 23rd – Class Review

This is what we covered in class on April 23rd, 2018.

White Belts 6:00pm – 6:40pm

Tonight we covered class expectations, attendance cards, the commands we use to begin and end class, and a few basic techniques. Your children are responsible for finding and presenting their own attendance cards, please do not get their attendance cards for them.

Commands to begin and end class

We will be beginning and ending class in a traditional fashion using Korean commands. Below are some English interpretations of the Korean pronunciations along with their meanings to help you practice with your children at home.

  • Chariot – Attention
  • Kooky Beret – Salute the flags
  • Barrow – Return
  • Mook Numb – Meditation
  • Barrow – Return
  • Chariot – Attention
  • Sa bum nim kay kun yet – Bow to Master Instructor

Positions, Stances, and Basics

In this section when Korean words appear we will be using the commonly accepted phonetic spellings.

  • Attention Position – “Cha Ryut”

    Standing straight, no moving, hands at your side, feet together, toes touching, focus straight ahead.

  • Ready Position – “Choon Bi”

    Left foot moves, feet shoulder width apart, both hands make fists, brought to the sides of your belt, double punches straight down.

  • Horse Stance

    Left foot moves, feet twice shoulder width apart, knees bent, toes forward, back straight, hands in fists on the hips.

  • Fighting Stance

    Right foot steps back, hands in fists by your chin.

  • How to make a fist

    Roll your fingers, lock your thumbs.

Techniques

  • Middle Punch

    In Horse Stance, start with left hand, aim towards the Solar Plexus (center of the chest).

  • Middle Block

    In Horse Stance, start with left hand, “Scoop the ice cream, look at your nails.”

  • Front Snap Kick

    In Fighting Stance, start with the right leg, “Bend it, Kick it, Bend it, Back.”

White Belts 6:50pm – 7:30pm

Punching – In Horse Stance, Left Hand First

    Middle Punch
    High Punch
    Low Punch

Blocking – In Horse Stance, Left Hand First

    Middle Block – “Scoop the ice cream, look at your nails!”
    High Block – “Scoop the ice cream, show your arm pit!”
    Low Block – “Hand to your shoulder, dust the dirt!”
    Outside to Inside Block – “Hand to your ear, catch the fly!”

Kicking – In Fighting Stance, Right Leg First

    Front Stretch Kick – “Don’t bend your knee!”
    Inside to Outside Kick – “Paint the rainbow!”
    Outside to Inside Kick – “High-Five with your foot!”
    Front Snap Kick – “Bend it, kick it, bend it, back!”

Jab

  1. RIGHT leg back Fighting Stance
  2. High Punch with the FRONT hand

Reverse Punch

  1. RIGHT leg back Fighting Stance
  2. Middle Punch with the REAR hand

Combination #1

  1. RIGHT leg back Fighting Stance
  2. Jab

  4. REAR leg Front Snap Kick – “Bend it, Kick it, Bend it, Back”
  5. Repeat with RIGHT side

Junior Ranks 7:40pm – 8:20pm

White Belts will be learning how to prepare for One Step Sparring, how to be an attacker, and One Step Sparring 1 and 2.

All Colored Belts received guidance on what their requirements are and are encouraged to practice everything they can remember. As a general guide; Yellow Belts will be learning One Steps 1 – 4, Orange Belts need to know One Steps 1 – 4 and will be learning 5 – 8, Blue Belts need to know One Steps 1 – 12 and will be learning 13 – 16, Green Belts need to know One Steps 1 – 16 and will be learning 17 – 20, Brown Belts need to know One Steps 1 – 20 and will be learning 21 – 24, Red Belts need to know One Steps 1 – 24 and will be learning 25 – 28.
